Wedding destination: Santorini, the most romantic place on earth

Wedding destination-santorini-view

By any measure, the title of ‘one of the most stunning islands in the world’ is an enviable title to hold. As subjective as the notion of beauty can be, when you gaze at the infinite blue horizon as the ocean and sky become one on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini, you will undeniably know that you are in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Perhaps the feeling stems from the picture-perfect views, the distinctive architecture of the island with its pure white-washed buildings interspersed with aqua blue domes, or the gentle breezes that bring the fragrant scent of growing basil and thyme that invigorate the senses and soothe the soul.

Santorini is part of an island chain known as the Cyclades, located in the southern Aegean Sea, less than two hundred miles from the mainland of Greece (a thirty-minute flight from Athens). As legend has it, Euphemus, son of Poseidon, was given a handful of dirt during his journeys, which he held next to his heart. He dreamed one night that the dirt had transformed into a beautiful woman who had promised him that when he threw the dirt into the sea, it would become an island for his descendants to live on.

Santorini, otherwise known as Thira, lends itself to exploration and discovery with abundant mythological references, including those that connect the island to Atlantis and a rich history with influences from the Minoan civilization.

The people are friendly and their hospitality is real. The food is splendid and the wines produced locally rival some of the best in Europe. The nightlife is lively and infused with local and global flavours. A wide range of luxury hotels providing world-class accommodation and five-star care as well as award-winning spa and wellness centres form an infrastructure that provides its multi-dimensional characteristics to Santorini and allows it to host an intimate wedding destination for two or an elaborate celebration for two hundred. The best time to plan such a gathering is between April and October.

Some of Santorini’s top choice venues include: Le CIel, Dana Villas, Santo WInery, Santa Irini Wedding Venue, Rocabella Hotel, Santorini Gem and many more.

Both on and off the island, couples and their guests will select from an array of activities. Enjoyable leisurely walks through many of the island’s towns and villages lined with shops, cafes , restaurants and churches. Oia, Fira, Pyrgos, Perissa and Megalochori are famous towns. In Akrotiri lies a prominent archaeological site, while visitors are sure to enjoy the beaches of Kamari and Monolithos. A visit to the local wineries for tours and wine tasting is always a popular favorite.

Exploring the surrounding waters of the island by boat provides breathtaking views of the dramatic multi-colored cliffs stretching 1,000 feet up from sea level, as well as the best vantage for magical sunsets.

Witness a sunset or a full moon in Santorini and you will carry a magical feeling with you forever.
